Small Axe were formed in April 2001 by keys player Paul Ballard and vocalist Neil Sartain

Having already been involved in several other musical project previously to taking a break after the birth of his 2 children Paul was itching to get back playing live music.

A passion for reggae music from a very young age meant there was only one way to go in regards to genre when starting this new project.

Amazingly Paul met Neil from the UB40 website forum.

The two of them soon recruited musicians and spent the next 5 months in the rehearsal room.

 Initially Paul and Neil asked the group to learn primarily hits from UB40 and also The Wailers.

September saw the band perform their debute gig at The Randalls Bar in the city of Bath to a sellout 350 people.

 Small Axe soon became very popular and decided to take on promoting a show at The Bath Pavilion.

 To most peoples amazement the show was a massive success and since then Small Axe have been back several times entertaining in excess of 4000 people, On one occasion with the legendary Pato Banton which had a number 1 chart hit with UB40.“Baby come back”

Over the past 7 years Small Axe have performed with many different musicians and vocalists which is what makes them so unique today.

At present the group are working with front man Troy Ellis. ( Son of Alton Ellis ) Whilst long time front man Neil takes a break. Neil is expected back very soon for the summer festivals..
